Class Description:
This class helps students develop deeper reading skills through close reading and thoughtful discussion of novels and non-fiction texts. Students learn to annotate, ask strong questions, and connect ideas across texts. Regular reading journals and written responses train them to think critically and express their ideas clearly.
About the Instructor:
Mr. James is a seventh-grade English Language Arts teacher at Salem Middle School with 25 years of experience in education. He has also been teaching at Champion for the past year, where both students and parents value his engaging and supportive teaching style. James holds dual state licenses in Middle Grades Language Arts and Elementary Education, along with Montessori certifications for lower and upper elementary. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in French from Calvin University and a Master’s degree in English specializing in American Literature. In addition to teaching, he has coached soccer and taught violin. He is dedicated to helping Champion students grow as readers, writers, and critical thinkers.
